That didn’t take long.
The first full trailer for “Scary Movie,” the sixth film in the successful franchise, dropped mere days ago. The movie brings back key players from the film, including Regina Hall and Anna Faris, along with some of the creative team who sparked the franchise.
Think Wayans. Lots of Wayans.
What’s not to love, especially since the trailer has big laughs and we haven’t seen a “Scary Movie” film since 2013?
Enter Collider and The Mary Sue. Both liberal sites decried the trailer for daring to tell a pronouns joke. See for yourself (the 20-second mark).
“He stabbed her!” a woman on the subway cries as the serial killer carves through his latest victim.
“Not her! My pronouns are ‘they/them,’” the impaled woman snaps back.
“‘Scary Movie 6’ Is Already Proving It’s Focusing on the Wrong Targets,” warns Collider, as if a series that mocks everything under the sun is supposed to keep select targets off-limits.
Didn’t Shawn, Marlon and Keenen Ivory Wayans meet with Team Collider before approving the script?
The whole point of the franchise is that everything is open to ridicule. The trailer in question also takes a jab at Republicans, but The Daily Wire has yet to pen a withering think piece about mocking the “wrong” targets.
Collider went there all the same.
The trailer focused way too much on punching down [emphasis added], and a confusing comment from Marlon Wayans now has us wondering if Scary Movie has the wrong goal this time around.
The goal is to make audiences laugh (spoiler alert). And, according to the creative team, “cancel Cancel Culture.”
Collider fears it just might work.
The line is more than a little low. You can argue that woke culture has gone too far over the past several years. Still, to make a joke that attacks someone’s identity, as if being gender-fluid is something to be made fun of, is cruel. Gender-fluid and trans people have already struggled enough; does a horror movie parody need to go after them as well?
Sorry, Collider. This isn’t 2017-2023. Woke is now a punchline, and even The New York Times admits the woke movie era feels musty already.
Naturally, The Mary Sue AKA Woke Central, complained about that line, too. Short version? That’s not funny!
It seems like every time one of our comedic heroes from the past comes back, they have an air of “old man yells at cloud.” Scary Movie 6 looks to add another entry of “Oh, these progressive kids are annoying” to an already roaring fire.
Not to be outdone, the scribe also plays the “punching down” card. That typically means you can’t mock our preferred targets.
When late-night comedians mocked out-of-work Americans for protesting the extreme pandemic lockdowns, did The Mary Sue or Collider say they were “punching down?” What about other media sites?
If they did, please share them in the comments section below. And good luck hunting!
