During The CW’s mid-2010s heyday, the network was thriving on sci-fi, fantasy, and superhero television. In 2016, many of its biggest shows were either peaking or entering major transition points: The Vampire Diaries was heading into its final season, The Flash was firmly established as a flagship hit, and Supergirl had just moved over from CBS. The network was also launching new series aimed at younger audiences, including the first season of Riverdale. It was a crowded moment for genre TV, and one that left little room for quieter, more emotionally driven experiments to break through.
