'The Dreadful' Review: Sophie Turner & Kit Harington Mount a Medieval Horror

There was a moment near the climax of The Dreadful, the Gothic horror tale of curses and murder from writer-director Natasha Kermani, when I realized I was basically watching a medieval horror version of The Mask. Without spoiling too much else, those who have seen the Japanese historical horror film Onibaba, which is based on the same Shin Buddhist parable that inspired The Dreadful, will know what I’m talking about. Unfortunately, The Dreadful doesn’t recreate any of The Mask’s signature gonzo pizzazz, and also doesn’t manage the same haunting terror that made Onibaba a J-horror precursor. Instead, The Dreadful is a middling historical-set scary movie, with a plot as vague as its title.
