Adam Carolla has a simple test for politicians who bend the truth like a pretzel.
“Stupid or liar?”
Are they really so ill-informed that they don’t know the truth? Or do they understand it all too well but happily tout their ignorance?
That comic rule rushed to mind this week following comments from the folks at “The Daily Show.” The Comedy Central program is part of the hard-Left late-night landscape.
Full stop. There’s no denying it.
Veteran faux anchor Jon Stewart established the show’s liberal bent during President George W. Bush’s presidency, and it’s never so much as flirted with the center since.
Current hosts Ronny Chieng and Jordan Klepper celebrated the “Show’s” 30th anniversary this week by declaring that they don’t take political sides. Here’s Chieng setting up his colleague to spew Fake News on the show’s podcast, courtesy of the essential Newsbusters.
“Cause I always feel ‘The Daily Show’ was always something that called balls and strikes, more or less, you know. And so, do you feel like that, you know, when you watched it as a college kid, did you feel like it was balls and strikes, or do you feel like it was on your team or, you know, what do you feel?”
Klepper’s response?
“I do think like the ethos of the show is like you call bull**** where it is.”
Remember how the show mocked the guy with the Nazi tattoo night after night, only to double down when two women claimed he abused them?
You don’t because it didn’t happen. And it didn’t happen because Graham Platner had a “D” next to his name. There’s no other explanation.
More recently, “The Daily Show” ignored the Fauci Diaries, choosing to focus on President Trump’s neck. Really.
Klepper doubled down with more misdirection.
And I do think like when Jon came back as well, and as Biden was aging, like it was very important for the show to articulate like what everybody f***ing saw, which I think what became, that’s where you see where you got critical of media, where like it does feel like media that sees itself as nonpartisan is purposely, like, not calling out when everybody feels, which is like the age of this candidate here. And our job here is to, and we articulated this, we talked about this. Jon talked about it. The show talked about it, like this is an emotional time. The job is not to articulate a cause that you feel. The job is to put pressure on the bull*** that you see.”
Spoiler alert: “The Daily Show” didn’t talk about President Biden’s obvious cognitive decline. When Stewart sorta-kinda hinted at it, the Left blew a gasket.
That was the end of that rich comic vein. They ignored Biden’s “Original Sin,” as did Jimmy Kimmel, Stephen Colbert, John Oliver and Seth Meyers. (Kimmel actively covered it up)
Hacks, the lot of them. Yet they continue to play the “we call balls and strikes” card without a hint of media blowback.
This isn’t a new phenomenon. The folks at “Saturday Night Live” play the same silly game. Show creator Lorne Michaels repeatedly claims the show plays it straight, politically speaking. So does low-rated “Tonight Show” host Jimmy Fallon.
Nonsense. Poppycock. Or, as the “Daily Show” hosts’ call it, bull****.
