One of the biggest complaints about modern horror movies is that it’s much more cost-effective and much faster to rely on digital effects as opposed to practical effects. No matter how sophisticated the technology gets, there’s just a weightlessness to digital effects that quickly takes you out of a movie. In that sense, one of the best decades for horror was the ’80s, as special-effects technology had advanced to the point of delivering just the right blend of realism and the grotesque, with that decade delivering countless masterpieces that are still regarded as the high bar of the genre.
