He doesn’t want to forget the feeling of finding her body, nor even the terror of erroneously thinking he could’ve done something more to save her. He can’t forget what all of it feels like — the pain, the guilt, the horror — without also forgetting the entire memory of her. You can’t be selective about memory, nor about grief.
