Police officers found Cobee on Monday evening while conducting a welfare check, according to the Atlanta Police Department. The APD officers arrived at 3507 Cardinal Drive SW with the Atlanta Fire Rescue Department at approximately 7:20 pm. The authorities reportedly forced entry to conduct the welfare check. Georgia Department of Human Services Repeated Abuse
A friend of the family, Destyne Akoon, revealed that the children’s father and several others reported the alleged abuse to the Georgia Department of Human Services Division of Family and Children Services. Akoon claimed the abuse was reported to DFCS multiple times throughout 2025, per Fox 5 Atlanta. The complaints were reported to the agency in September, October, November, and December of 2025.
“It came from a friend of mine who reported to DFCS last year that the kids were being abused when we discovered the abuse,” said Akoon.
In addition, the boys’ father reportedly submitted an emergency referral mere days before the boys were found.
Cobee’s great-aunt Rachel shared a message on a GoFundMe page set up for the family.
“Our family received the heartbreaking news that my four-year-old great-nephew, Cobee Cooks, had tragically lost his life following horrific physical abuse,” it reads, in part. “His brother survived but suffered serious injuries and remains hospitalized, receiving medical care as he begins what may be a long road to physical and emotional recovery.”
