Michael Douglas' Family: Kirk Douglas, Catherine Zeta-Jones & 3 Kids

Watch: Michael Douglas Broke Up With 5 Women After Going Public With Catherine Zeta-Jones Romance

For decades, fans have watched Michael Douglas tell stories on the screen.

But now, the Oscar winner is telling his own in his new memoir One Helluva Ride. And just like with his films and TV shows, he’s aiming to leave an impression on audiences.

“I hope that it’s the same thing that they get from one of my movies,” Michael explained to 11Alive while promoting his recently released book, “where they get a couples of hours of their time of entertainment and at the same time picked up a little nourished food.”

In this story, the cast consists of him and his family members, with him detailing his relationships with his wife, actress Catherine Zeta-Jones; his children Cameron Douglas, 47, Dylan Douglas, 26, and Carys Zeta Douglas, 23; and his father, the late actor Kirk Douglas.

“For me, the strongest point is how important family is and the extended family,” the 82-year-old continued. “That really is what’s the most important. [In] these difficult times, I think remember that and hang on close to your family ties.”

Michael has certainly gone through his own difficult times.

“I’ve spent a significant portion of my career playing some version of the modern, flawed, American male,” he wrote in his memoir. “You’ll see from these pages that it wasn’t exactly a stretch for me.”

And ultimately, his journey has been one helluva ride.

“Life is an adventure, or at least it’s supposed to be,” The Kominsky Method star added. “Today, I see my life as an eight-decade long adventure.”

In honor of the release of Michael’s memoir—which details his childhood, career, past romances and family life—learn more about the people who not only get to see him in front of the camera but know the man he is behind it too.

Michael Douglas

While fans know Michael Douglas for his work in front of the screen, he feels lucky for the life he’s built behind it too.

“I found the love of my life in Catherine Zeta-Jones,” the Oscar winner wrote in his memoir One Helluva Ride, released October 2026, “I’ve been blessed with a remarkable and loving family, three amazing children Cameron, Dylan and Carys, and two grandchildren Lua and Ryder, as well as wonderful, loyal friends that have been with my for decades, and some much longer than that and a unique dual career as both an actor and a producer spanning over a hundred films and television series.”

However, Michael has also been open about challenges he’s faced, including divorce, rehab for substance abuse in the ’90s, his 2010 cancer battle and Cameron’s time in prison. But through it all, he continued, he’s “learned to put as much time into my family as friends as I once put into my work.”

Kirk Douglas

Born in 1916, Kirk Douglas starred in several movies, including Spartacus, Lust for Life, Champion and The Bad and the Beautiful. And Michael has been open about their complicated relationship, noting there was love but that Kirk also had a temper and there was pressure with being his son while trying to find his own way in the industry.

“I spent a lot of time trying to reconcile my conflicted feelings about my father,” he wrote in One Helluva Ride. “I admired and looked up to him—how could I not? But the arguments and constant tension had a great impact on me.”

Kirk married actress Diana Douglas—mom to Michael and his producer brother Joel Douglas—in 1943 before they split in 1950. He then wed Anne Buydens in 1954 and they welcomed two more kids: actor Eric Douglas, who died from an accidental overdose at age 46 in 2004, and producer Peter Douglas.

Diana died in 2015 at age 92 followed by Kirk in 2020 at age 103, with Anne passing away the next year at age 102.

Diandra Luker

Eight weeks after meeting, Michael wed Diandra Luker in 1977.

They welcomed son Cameron the following year, but the couple later faced struggles—including infidelity, Michael’s work and time away on set, his drinking and drug use and just wanting different things in life. As a result, they split in 1995 and their divorce was finalized in 2000.

“We had married so quickly after meeting, we really didn’t know each other or have any idea what the other person’s hopes and dreams were for the future, let alone what that would look like in practicality,” Michael wrote in his memoir. “We probably should never have gotten married. But Cameron made it all worth it.”

Diandra is now married to William Legge, the Earl of Dartmouth and stepbrother of the late Princess Diana.

Cameron Douglas

When Cameron was born in 1978, Michael’s career was just starting to take off, admitting in his book that his firstborn felt the strain from his relationship with Diandra and his absence due to work.

In his own memoir Long Way Home, Cameron detailed his upbringing as well as his battle with addiction that included his 2009 arrest and nearly seven years in prison on drug-related charges

Sober since 2016, Cameron has admitted it took time for him and Michael to heal their relationship. However, Michael wrote in his memoir that Cameron has “become the man he was always meant to be,” including a father to Lua and Ryder and an actor in his own right.

Catherine Zeta-Jones

Michael still remembers the moment he first laid eyes on Catherine in her 1998 movie The Mask of Zorro.

“I had never fallen in love with a woman on a movie screen before,” he wrote in his memoir, “until I saw Catherine.”

A few weeks later, he met her offscreen at France’s Deauville American Film Festival and knew she was the one.

“I walked her to the elevator and prepared to say goodnight,” Michael added. “Instead, in a moment of temporary insanity, I blurted out, ‘I’m going to be the father of your children.'”

Sure enough, the Fatal Attraction alum and the Chicago star put aside their 25-year age gap, wed in 2000 and welcomed two children together.

Dylan Douglas

During their engagement, Michael and Catherine welcomed son Dylan in 2000. By that point, the Wall Street star, then in his 50s, had shifted his priorities.

“I’m not driven like I once was – these days I am consumed with being a father and with my responsibilities as a husband,” Michael told The Guardian in 2010. “I never anticipated starting a family at my age. I’m genuinely happy to let Catherine work, while I stay at home with the children. I cherish this time.”

Graduating from Brown University in 2022 with a degree in history, Dylan acts, works in politics and hosts podcasts, including Young American.

Carys Zeta Douglas

In 2003, Michael and Catherine welcomed daughter Carys.

Also a Brown alum, she graduated in 2025 with a degree in Film and International Relations.

“I grew up doing theater, and I didn’t study acting in school,” Carys told People at the time, “but that’s why I’m happy to be in such an informative arts space, so hopefully more of that.”

Indeed, it looks like she’s staying in the family business as she acted in a 2026 production of the play The Seagull.
