Marie Dubois born Claudine Lucie Pauline Huzé on 12 January 1937 and died on 15 October 2014 was a Parisian-born French actress. Her film debut was in 1959, first gaining notice the next year as Léna in Shoot the Piano Player. She then played mainly supporting roles. In the 1960s she appeared in New Wave films such as Jules and Jim and The Thief of Paris, thrillers like Hot Line, and comedies like La Ronde, La Grande Vadrouille, and Monte Carlo or Bust. These are my top 10 movies for Marie Dubois.
10. The Surveyors (1972) – Drama
Lucien asks a friend, Léon, to carry to the woman he desires, Alice, a basket of provisions and to thank him for it offers him its cap. Léon seduces Alice, a small brunette, and admits later to his friend his “overflowings”. Léon returns to Alice’s home but it is no anymore the same person; she is blonde and bears no resemblance to the woman the day before! One is sensual and welcoming, the other, mysterious and independent. Alice in Verbland! No drama, no action, a so “seventies” nonchalance… and the art of the conversation as the main subject of a delicious film, worn by remarkable actors (Marie Dubois, Jean-Luc Bideau, and Jacques Denis).
9. The House of the Bories (1970) – Drama
Julien, a renowned geologist, lives with his wife Isabelle and their two children in a country house. But his sullen, uncompromising attitude leaves tensions high. The arrival of Carl-Stephane, a young German student, brings a breath of fresh air and lightness to the household.
8. On the Tip of the Tongue (1976) – Drama/Romance
The love story between a withdrawn and taciturn teenager and a lonely woman 20 years older. An endearing painting of awakening to sensuality, against the backdrop of everyday life of the small provincials: Fernand, fifteen the age of stealthy glances, lies, and infinite dreams is a solitary, observant, different boy from other teenagers of his age while being so close to them. Locked in his room, he collects pictures of beautiful naked actresses to drown his boredom.
7. That Tender Age (1964) – Drama
Antoine and Marie decided to introduce their parents before the wedding. Summer vacation looks like a good time, so the Lartigue family prepares to host Malhouin family. But it turns out that the harsh Emil Malhouin is not too happy to get acquainted with his future relatives…
6. Who Cares: Anatomy of a Delivery Boy (1971) – Comedy
A sensual young man begins his working life as a delivery boy. Later, as a married man, his father moves into the household. Everyone seems content when the father asks to occasionally have sex with his son’s wife. Their contentment only increases when the father brings home a young street criminal, and they are able to add to the variety of their joinings. The son has become a truck driver by this time.
5. La Menace (1977) – Crime/Thriller
Henri Savin has managed a trucking company for his lover, Dominique Montlaur, for many years. Now he is planning to leave her for Julie Manet, the woman he has made pregnant, and Dominique is hysterical. She first threatens suicide, then shows up at a meeting of Savin and Julie. Dominique tries everything she can think of to break Savin and Julie apart, to no avail.
4. The Wise Guys (1965) – Drama/Comedy
Hector Valentin (Bourvil) returns to France from Canada when he inherits a small sawmill. He has difficulties restarting the run-down operation which has inefficient workers and is hampered by the dirty tactics of its bigger, wealthier neighbor. Laurent (Lino Ventura) is an ex-con who is seeking revenge on the man who ratted him out and is himself finishing a prison sentence. He talks Hector into participating in a work program for paroled felons and arranges for his target to be in the group of convicts sent to work at the sawmill.
3. The Thief of Paris (1967) – Crime/Drama
Georges (Jean-Paul Belmondo) patiently awaits his inheritance while nurturing his love for his cousin Charlotte (Geneviève Bujold). But after discovering that his guardian uncle has frittered away his fortune and betrothed Charlotte to another suitor, Georges responds by burglarizing the family of his beloved’s fiancé. The robbery is so exhilarating that Georges embarks on a crime spree, believing himself a righteous crusader against a bloated bourgeoisie.
2. Shoot the Piano Player (1960) – Drama/Noir
Charlie (Charles Aznavour) is a former classical pianist who has changed his name and now plays jazz in a grimy Paris bar. When Charlie’s brothers, Richard (Jean-Jacques Aslanian) and Chico (Albert Remy), surface and ask for Charlie’s help while on the run from gangsters they have scammed, he aids their escape.
