June 2016: INDEPENDENCE DAY RESURGENCE
We always knew they were coming back. After INDEPENDENCE DAY redefined the event movie genre, the next epic chapter delivers global catastrophe on an unimaginable scale. Using recovered alien technology, the nations of Earth have collaborated on an immense defense program to protect the planet. But nothing can prepare us for the aliens’ advanced and unprecedented force. Only the ingenuity of a few brave men and women can bring our world back from the brink of extinction.
Another part of it is also the fun factor. Independence Day modernized the disaster movie premise, replacing natural disasters with extraterrestrial ones and slathering on the fun. It borrowed a trend of blowing up famed national monuments from the B Movie genre and gave it steroids on screen, something that would continue over the next two decades. And it featured an ensemble cast with solid chemistry who meshed really well.
Was it a perfect film? Far from it. And a sequel could go either way – but there are some promising signs. Lets take a look at those now, and examine why Independence Day: Resurgence might actually, surprisingly be good.
