Is ‘How to Rob a Bank’ Really ‘DSA: The Movie?’

There’s a scene in the “How to Rob a Bank” trailer that evokes one of the worst public executions in recent memory.

Luigi Mangione stands accused of killing a healthcare CEO by shooting him from behind. The murder stained the nation’s soul, in part, because so many Americans rallied behind the alleged assassin.

They even made a musical about him.

Now, Hollywood is doing more than evoking that horrific crime. It’s tapping into a DSA-style assault on capitalism via “How to Rob a Bank.”

The film, set for a Sept. 4 release, follows a gang of “Robin Hood”-style influencers who steal from the rich to give to the poor. They’re Internet famous and kind-hearted, according to the trailer, unless their victims are part of the broken capitalist system.

Then, the gloves come off.

The movie, directed by David Leitch, stars Nicholas Hoult, Pete Davidson, Zoë Kravitz and John C. Reilly as a big, bad FBI agent trying to enforce the law.

The trailer all but screams “DSA,” the radical wing of the modern Democratic party that doesn’t believe in law enforcement, let alone capitalism. The same radicals look the other way when neophytes expose massive government fraud under the Democrats’ watch.

Here’s betting New York’s own Zohran Mamdani will likely be first in line on opening day.

The Mangione-like sequence finds Hoult, the robbery ringleader, pointing a gun directly at the Reilly character’s head.

A prone Reilly tells his would-be assassin, “Whoa, whoa, whoa … I don’t think you’re a murderer.”

“No, I’m not. Banks are,” he replies. “And when they kill someone you love, they don’t get a bullet. They get a bonus.”

Subtle. And the dialogue elsewhere in the trailer couldn’t be more on the nose.

“They’re making a point,” says Kravitz’s character, a hacker forced to flush out the robbers, about Hoult’s fellow robbers. “The system is corrupt.”

Leitch isn’t a politically charged auteur. Action, chaos and comedy are his calling cards, witness films like “Deadpool 2” and “The Fall Guy.” He still directed “Bullet Train,” a film asking us to cheer on a gaggle of lovable hit men, led by Brad Pitt.

Awwww.

Will “How to Rob a Bank” be as one-sided as its trailer portends? Will midterm-minded movie goers flock to this kind of story or see it as the soak-the-rich pablum teased by the trailer?

We’ll find out starting Sept. 4.
