It’s late enough in the year to look back at 2026 and declare this a Good Year For Movies™, but have you had a chance to check out one of the biggest underseen gems of them all yet? “Forgotten Island” unfortunately lived up to its title upon its theatrical release in late September, flopping at the box office despite so many factors working in its favor. Like “Coco” or “Moana” or “Encanto” before it, the DreamWorks Animation film tells a refreshingly original story through a strong cultural lens, following two best friends from childhood in the Philippines during the 1990s. As life inevitably takes them in different directions and tests their bond, a magical portal transports them to Nakali, a mythical island where memories — and the value we place upon them — are the currency of the land.
The animation style is nothing short of gorgeous, the voice talent involved speaks for itself (including the likes of H.E.R., Liza Soberano, Dave Franco, Manny Jacinto, Jenny Slate, and more), and the main message of the movie is bound to move you to tears by the end … and, now, viewers at home will have their chance to catch up and check out “Forgotten Island” for themselves. Universal Pictures has announced that one of the best animated features of the year is making its debut on digital platforms beginning October 27, 2026, just in time for scary season. Not to be outdone, the blockbuster movie will also be made available on physical media a little over a month later, setting itself up for some prime holiday gifting.
“Forgotten Island” may not have made the splash in theaters we were all hoping for, but something tells us it’ll end up right where it needs to be.
Forgotten Island comes to DVD, Blu-ray, and 4K UHD in December 2026
“Forgotten Island” is coming to viewers at home faster than you can say, “Tayo Na!” After its digital release, the DreamWorks original from “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish” directors Joel Crawford and Januel P. Mercado will be made available on DVD, Blu-ray, and 4K UHD on December 1, 2026. That’s good news for those interested in the film’s overt anime influences and its overall animation style, which practically begs to be slowed down and dissected on a frame-by-frame basis. But that’s not all. Those who grab themselves a copy of “Forgotten Island” during its home release will also be able to enjoy a bevy of extras and bonus features, from an all-too-rare directors commentary track to a behind-the-scenes look at the making of the movie and an exploration of the Filipino roots of the story.
