HBO is always on the hunt for its next big fantasy property, and while there have been some hits and misses over the years, the studio will always have the Game of Thrones franchise to fall back on. The original Game of Thrones show, which is based on George R.R. Martin’s still-unfinished novel series, A Song of Ice and Fire, premiered back in 2011 with one of the greatest seasons of TV ever made. While Game of Thrones continued with several strong seasons, its final season, which aired in 2019, lives in infamy as one of the worst endings in television. This widely rejected ending didn’t kill the Game of Thrones franchise, though, which has since returned with two spin-offs, House of the Dragon and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.
