Shows like Happy Days, Welcome Back, Kotter, The Wonder Years, Saved by the Bell, 90210, Freaks and Geeks, andDawson’s Creek set out to capture the major rites of passage that teenagers face on a daily basis. Each of the titles was specific to its respective decade, acting as a mirror to the realities (albeit often dramatized) that high schoolers face both in the halls and at home. With each production and its varying cast of personalities, the tropes of the time were showcased and, as time continued to pass and audiences got more comfortable with more grittiness shown on their screens, so did the subject matter.
