I’ve been reading fantasy since before I had the vocabulary to explain why I fell in love with it. Something about the weight of an invented world, the smell of a library that doesn’t exist, and the grief for a character who never lived, hit differently than anything else. Over the years, I’ve read widely and obsessively enough to know that “greatest” is a loaded word, especially in a genre this vast and this tribal. People will go to the mat for their favorites. So let me be upfront: this list is a considered, argued case for the 11 fantasy books published since 2000 that I think changed something. In the genre, in readers, and in the way we talk about fantasy.
