A box set containing three early works from Russian filmmaker Alexander Sokurov arrives on Blu-ray (with two films on DVD) from Cinema Guild. The masterworks include the poetic Whispering Pages (using Dostoevsky’s Crime and Punishment as its main inspiration), the aural Stone, and a surreal retelling of Gustave Flaubert’s Madame Bovary, 1990’s Save and Protect.
Sokurov has had a prolific career, admired by everyone from Susan Sontag to Darren Aronofsky. Even Vladimir Putin helped to fund Sokurov’s 2011 Cannes Golden Lion winner, Faust, which was surprising considering the director’s history depicting Russian leaders in a less than flattering light.
Christmas behavior is insane,You put a tree in your house, and put lights on the outside. It’s also a holiday that was taken from the pagan celebration of the winter solstice and turned into Jesus’ birthday. And to be extra cynical, it’s a date intended to fuel consumerism and materialism.
But none of that matters if you use it as an opportunity to gather around with loved ones, and have a good time.Classic movies like It’s a Wonderful Life, Miracle on 34th Street, and A Christmas Story are fun for the whole family, but just because it’s Christmas doesn’t mean it can only be kid-friendly.
Sex in films is very prevalent today and, for me, is acceptable, as long as the movies are rated properly so as to protect children, the scenes are done tastefully, the actors have the chemistry to make the sexual attraction believable, and last but not least, it has to arouse me. I don’t know how to describe a great sex scene, but I know it when I can feel it.
In others words ,Sex happens. It happens in real life. It happens in books. It happens in music. It happens to music. And, it happens in the movies. Sometimes it's good, sometimes it's bad, and sometimes it's out-of-this-world, cannot-be-repeated, oh-na-na-what's-my-name amazing. Yet, oddly, it's also one of those life-shaking moments that can too often be forgotten. (They were just good, you know?)
There are some actresses we expect to do nude scenes. There are many we want to do nude scenes (if I acted, I would certainly be in this camp). Then there are those that we would never expect that from. Okay, I will admit that the advent of the internet has practically killed all surprises. We go to the theater generally knowing who is going to show what when. However, even knowing that, very little can prepare you for the scene where Kathy Bates takes it off.
There you have it. Those are certainly some of the most shocking and surprising nude scenes to ever come out of Hollywood. What makes an actress decide to go nude? A lot factors into it, we're sure. Do you feel we missed anyone? And who were you most shocked to see bare all in the long history of nude scenes in movies?
